“Propaganda & Political Song”

“Power tends to confuse itself with virtue.”
—William Fulbright

Struggle and protest are the heart of America. It is no coincidence that the Constitution's first amendment guarantees the right to petition and protest. Disagreement is not only tolerated, but desirable.

Welcome all poets, pundits, lobbyists, songwriters, columnists,  and politicians.

With power, with pens, with voices, with bank accounts, with commentary and synthesis, with art and song-Americans attempt to influence each other.

This performance, which debuted at the 2004 Chicago Humanities Festival features some of the voices of the 1960’s including:

  • LBJ
  • Allen Ginsberg
  • Bob Dylan
  • Stevie Wonder
  • JFK
  • NY Cabdrivers
  • Malcolm X
  • Richard Nixon
  • Stephen Stills
  • Sly Stone

It is the debate that comprises the American story. It occurs on the floor of the Senate, in the notebook of the poet, in the corporate boardroom, in the song of the singer, the letters to the editor, and the questions of children.
